Your guide to health screenings in Singapore and what tests you might need

We get it. Booking a health screening isn't exactly at the top of your mind when you're feeling "okay." Why fix something that isn't broken, right? But here's the truth: our bodies don't always shout when something's wrong. Sometimes, they whisper. A dull ache that keeps coming back, an unexplained change in energy levels, or even a shift in mood, could be signs of something deeper, and catching those signs early can make all the difference.
 
People often delay health screenings because they generally feel well, or due to concerns about costs, fear of the unknown, or uncertainty about where to start. In this guide, we'll help you tune in to your body, understand what tests are available, and when it's worth going for a medical check-up in Singapore.

What's in a health screening? (And what's considered "basic")

If you've never done one before, the idea of a health screening might sound complicated, but a basic screening is actually quite straightforward and designed to cover essential health indicators. These tests are meant to spot potential risks early, even before symptoms appear.
Here's what a typical basic health screening includes:
 
  • Body Mass Index (BMI): This gives an overview of whether your weight falls within a healthy range, and helps detect potential risks related to obesity or being underweight.
  • Blood Pressure (BP): High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, and often goes unnoticed. Regular checks can alert you to any issues.
  • Blood Glucose: This measures your blood sugar levels and helps identify early signs of insulin resistance or diabetes.
  • Total Cholesterol Profile: A breakdown of good and bad cholesterol gives insight into your cardiovascular health and risk of blockages.
 
"A basic screening is a great start, but once you hit your 30s or if you have a family history of chronic illness, it is recommended to get advice from your doctor on the most suitable tests for you," says Dr Lee Yanqing, Family Physician and COO at HMI OneCare Clinic.
 
Depending on your age, gender, and medical history, your doctor may suggest add-on tests such as:
 
  • Liver and kidney function tests
  • Vitamin and mineral deficiency screening
  • Thyroid checks
  • Urine analysis
 
These optional tests can provide a more complete picture of your health, especially if you're experiencing symptoms like fatigue, unexplained weight gain or loss, or have a family history of certain conditions.

When to go deeper: Signs you shouldn't ignore

We tend to ignore symptoms when they're small, for example, a bit of bloating, a few too many headaches, or low energy in the afternoons. But when these issues linger or start affecting your daily routine, it's worth asking: is this just stress… or something more?
 
Here are a few signs that may warrant a more advanced medical check-up in Singapore:
 
  • Persistent fatigue that doesn't go away even after rest or holidays
  • Bloating, unexplained weight loss or gain, or digestive issues that disrupt your meals
  • Recurring headaches or vision changes
  • Mood swings, hair thinning, or skin changes that could point to hormonal imbalances
  • Changes in menstrual cycles or symptoms after pregnancy or menopause
  • Burnout symptoms like mental fog, body aches, or sleep disruptions
  • Strong family history of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, or high blood pressure
 
Major life events, such as turning 40, recovering from a serious illness, or going through significant stress, are also important checkpoints for your health. Advanced screenings can include more in-depth blood work, hormonal panels, imaging tests like ultrasounds, or cardiac and respiratory assessments. These tests aren't about overreacting; they're about understanding your body and protecting your quality of life.
 
"We often see patients only after symptoms worsen, and that's unfortunate. A thorough check-up at the right time can prevent complications because it's not just about treating illness, but it's more important to detect warning signs and act early," adds Dr Lee.

Cancer screenings: Which ones and when?

Now, let's talk about the big "C". Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in Singapore, but also one of the most preventable and treatable when caught early. Regular cancer screenings are a crucial part of proactive healthcare, especially for those with risk factors or family history.
 
Here's what you need to know:
 
  • Cervical cancer screening is recommended for women from the age of 25. This can be done through a Pap smear, which checks for cell changes in the cervix, or an HPV test, which screens for high-risk virus strains that may cause cancer.
  • Breast cancer screening via mammogram is recommended for women from age 40 onwards, and earlier if you have a family history.
  • Colorectal cancer screening typically starts at age 50. It involves the Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) or a colonoscopy, which checks for polyps or blood in the stool.
  • Prostate cancer screening is also available for men, and your GP can advise based on your history.
These tests are quick, non-invasive (or minimally invasive), and more importantly, they can give you peace of mind or help you take action early.
 
"Cancer doesn't always present symptoms early on. Screenings like mammograms or HPV tests catch issues before they progress, which can make all the difference," says Dr Lee.

Unsure where to start? Speak to a GP first

With so many screening options available, it's normal to feel overwhelmed and wonder, what exactly do you need?
 
Instead of second-guessing or Googling your symptoms, the best move is to speak to a GP or family doctor. They'll look at your lifestyle, age, symptoms (if any), and family history to recommend the most relevant checks. This saves you time, money, and stress, and ensures you're not over-testing or under-testing.
 
"A personalised health screening plan reduces uncertainty and helps you proactively manage any potential health concerns. Everyone's body tells a different story, and our job, as doctors, is to help patients listen to theirs. With a proper understanding of their medical and family history, along with any concerns that the patient presents, we can advise on a suitable health screening plan that is personalised for them," Dr Lee explains.
 
Health screenings should be personal, and your plan should reflect your body, needs and goals, not someone else's.

Be proactive and don't wait for a wake-up call

There's a reason why they say prevention is better than cure. Health screenings aren't just for people with symptoms; they're for anyone who wants to stay in control of their future.
 
The reality is that conditions like high cholesterol, diabetes, and even cancer may show no signs until they have progressed. And by then, treatments can become more complex, expensive, and emotionally draining.
 
But when you tune in early and listen to your body's quieter signals, you give yourself more time, options, and peace of mind. So, book your screening and ask your GP the questions you've been putting off.
 
Your health doesn't need to break down to get your attention. Sometimes, it just needs you to listen.
