Personal Accident Insurance

What are the things to look out for when signing up for a PA policy?

  • Definitions
Look out for how the plan defines 'accident'. Some plans are more comprehensive in their definition, Check if the plan covers against 'loss of use of limbs' or whether compensation is paid only when complete physical severance occurs. Also, look to see if follow-up treatments are covered, and if they are, for how long. Follow-up treatments include physiotherapy sessions, removal of metal plates etc. These are usually covered up to one year from the date of the accident.

  • Exclusions
The standard PA policy does not cover the following risks, conditions or persons:
    - War and warlike operations
    - People in active military service
    - Air crew
    - Pregnancy-related injuries
    - Pre-existing illness
    - Suicide/self-inflicted injuries
    - Injuries sustained due to drug or alcohol abuse
    - Professional sports persons

  • Scope of coverage
Make sure the plan offers 24-hour, worldwide coverage. Check the schedule of dismemberment or disability and look out for the pay-out scales. For the same loss, different plans may offer different degrees of compensation. For example, some plans will pay a maximum of 100% of the sum assured, while others offer up to 150%.
